Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)
Focusing on feelings as a pathway to lasting change | Ontario-wide virtual therapy, based in Hamilton
What is Emotion-Focused Therapy?
Emotions are not just fleeting feelings. They're fundamental to how we organize our sense of self and navigate the world. Emotion-Focused Therapy, or EFT, recognizes emotion as the basic element that forms our sense of identity and rapidly alerts us to what matters for our well-being. Instead of just managing emotions, we focus on awareness, acceptance, understanding, and transformation of emotional experiences, helping you access your emotions' intuitive wisdom to create lasting change from within.
What this looks like in a session:
As your therapist, we might help you slow down and explore what an emotion like anger actually feels like in your body, discovering a deeper emotional layer of hurt or fear underneath, and then finding your authentic voice to practice expressing the needs that live at the core of that anger.
Think of it as emotional alchemy: transforming a feeling that seems stuck or uncomfortable into a source of inner power that energizes your clarity, honest expression, and choices that feel truly aligned with what matters most to you.
An Emotion-Focused Therapy approach might be for you if…
You feel things deeply, but aren’t always sure what your emotions are telling you
You notice emotional reactions feel bigger than the present moment, like something from the past is being stirred
You carry feelings that haven’t had a place to land: things left unsaid, unresolved, or unfinished
You’re ready to relate to your emotions with curiosity instead of avoidance or overwhelm
A self-critical voice shows up strongly and shapes how you see yourself or your choices
You want space to fully feel, express, and make sense of your emotions – not just manage them
